Following old age of delays, the newfangled Atari VCS system has officially launched. What do you mean you're non intrigued aside a fastidious box with a low-power daring Zen embedded CPU for $300, or $400 with controllers? Pffft kids these days.
Seriously though: the only good thing about this is the look. Spell Atari boasts that the VCS is "a modern console / PC hybrid" machine, the reality is that the Ryzen R1606G processor this is based on is, by today's standards, yellowed and graphically weak—especially at this price. For comparison's interest, and yes I appreciate this isn't in the PC space, the Xbox Series S offers a much more powerful custom Elvis 2 CPU, beefier GPU, and really fast entrepot for the corresponding price.
Got to love some of the promo images though. I don't know about you, only my young children enjoy to use my home cinema system to play Pong.
It's hardly surprising a ship's company that's tried everything from fantasy hotels to merchandising NFTs should produce an underpowered and expensive device, though to give credit where it's due I suppose fashioning anything during the contemporary chip deficit is an accomplishment. Atari's 'vision' of a Linux machine with other games you pot download is, however, unlikely to continue the long.
Should you have the kind of retro nostalgia that the Atari VCS is nerve-racking to play off, because I do get a slight wonk lust from looking at the gorgeous walnut version, you'd be better off building a tiny retro PC: buy a Razzing Protease inhibitor and clean up an imitation VCS case on Etsy. I mean, present's an Engadget article from 2012 explaining how to get Atari 2600 games running on the innovational Raspberry Pi.
Atari, or the company it once was at to the lowest degree, will always hold a hallowed place in gambling chronicle: and the original VCS will always be the first console that rattling broke into the mass market. This late Atari VCS, sadly, is unlikely to bring much of valuate to such a bequest.
